How To Build Culture through Strengths-Based Communication

As a seasoned leader and Master Certified Coach, I’ve witnessed firsthand the profound impact of strengths-based communication on organizational dynamics. From CliftonStrengths® assessments to strategic planning sessions, I’ve seen teams flourish when empowered to leverage their innate abilities. Today we will discuss how to build culture through strengths-based communication.

CliftonStrengths® and Communication Styles

Let’s break down a few CliftonStrengths® and Communication Styles starting with the ACTIVATOR® strengths theme. With Activator®, Your communication style contributes a sense of urgency and equally contagious energy which easily motivates others to get moving and take action. For example, you may tend to speak without baking your thoughts first. Your natural impatience with delay and waiting may be off-putting to your audience or collaborators. However, be careful to slow down in communicating with others.

With HARMONY®, your communication style contributes tranquility and calmness to negotiate easily with all parties to establish a common ground. Because you may be somewhat conflict-averse, grow your Harmony into its most robust expression and recognize that productive conflict can be the friction that polishes the pearl. Furthermore, Help the group stay focused on the common ground, recall the practical aspects of the situation, and have the influence you can have.

When you have RESPONSIBILITY® in your strengths, your communication style contributes a high standard of commitment, integrity, and promises kept. In fact, Responsibility can be about the ‘I’ (as in I feel responsible; therefore, I must do it myself). Furthermore, work at making it about the ‘we’ and letting go, when appropriate, to empower others to participate in the work.

Cultivating a Culture of Collaboration and Innovation

Now, imagine infusing your business endeavors with purpose and passion, aligning your actions with your core values and beliefs. By integrating faith and integrity into your leadership approach, you can elevate your business practices and inspire others to do the same.

Here are some actionable steps on how to build a culture through strengths-based communication:

1.      Conduct CliftonStrengths® Assessments: Start by having each team member complete the CliftonStrengths® assessment. This will provide valuable insights into individual strengths and talents, forming the foundation for strengths-based communication.

2.      Acknowledge and Value Diversity: Emphasize the importance of diversity in strengths within your team. Encourage team members to appreciate and respect the unique talents each individual brings to the table.

3.      Facilitate Strengths-Based Conversations: Encourage open discussions where team members can share their strengths, experiences, and ideas. Use language that highlights strengths rather than weaknesses, focusing on what individuals excel at rather than areas for improvement.

4.      Integrate Strengths into Goal Setting: When setting goals and objectives, consider each team member’s strengths and how they can contribute to achieving those goals. Align tasks and responsibilities with individuals’ strengths to maximize efficiency and engagement.

5.      Provide Opportunities for Growth: Offer training and development opportunities that build on individuals’ strengths. This could include workshops, seminars, or coaching sessions tailored to help team members further develop and leverage their unique talents.

6.      Lead by Example: As a leader, demonstrate the value of strengths-based communication in your own interactions. Highlight your team’s strengths, recognize achievements, and encourage collaboration based on each person’s strengths.

7.      Celebrate Successes: Acknowledge and celebrate successes that result from strengths-based collaboration. This reinforces the importance of leveraging strengths within the team and motivates individuals to continue contributing their best work.

8.      Continuously Evaluate and Adjust: Regularly review your team dynamics and communication practices to ensure they remain aligned with a strengths-based approach. Solicit feedback from team members and be willing to adjust as needed to optimize effectiveness.

By implementing these actionable steps, you can cultivate a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence within your organization, driven by the power of strengths-based communication.
