Make Your CliftonStrengths Work Together - Two women working together in an artistic flower shop setting.

“Strengths don’t live in isolation—they’re social, dynamic, and powerful in partnership.” —Curt Liesveld

Have you ever felt like two of your Strengths were teaming up like best friends, or instead, pulling you in opposite directions? What if there was an easier strategy to make your CliftonStrengths work together?

That’s the essence of Theme Dynamics, a concept pioneered by my late mentor and Gallup coach, Curt Liesveld.

Curt had a rare ability to translate the science of Strengths into personal, actionable insight. His work on theme pairs and packages remains one of the most impactful tools for turning individual Strengths into leadership synergy.

In one of his final reflections, Curt wrote:

“Strengths development is a lifelong process of understanding, embracing, and investing in who you were divinely created to be.”—Curt Liesveld, Gallup

This blog honors Curt’s legacy and simplifies his insights so you can apply them in your life, work, and leadership.

1. Think in Pairs, Not Just Profiles—Making CliftonStrengths Work Together

Instead of viewing your Top 5 or Top 10 CliftonStrengths themes as separate traits, consider how they interact with each other.

Ask yourself:

“What happens when two of my Strengths combine?”

Here are a few examples from my own journey:

– Focus + Achiever = Laser-Driven Productivity

I chase goals with intensity and purpose.

– Woo + Communication = Magnetic Messaging

I love connecting with people and naturally know how to communicate in ways that win hearts and minds.

– Futuristic + Significance = Vision with Impact

I dream big and want those dreams to make a meaningful difference.

Try This: Choose three pairings from your Top 10. Give each one a short name or phrase that reflects how it plays out in your leadership or relationships.

2. Use Theme Packages to Understand Your Motivation—Making CliftonStrengths Work Together

Curt also created Strengths Packages, which group themes into broader performance patterns. These packages help explain your deeper wiring (why you think, feel, and act the way you do).

Here’s how my Strengths show up in different packages:

– Motivational Package: Achiever, Competition, Significance

I’m wired to strive, make an impact, and finish strong.

– Social Package: Communication, Woo, Relator

I connect both deeply and widely in personal and professional settings.

– Perspective Package: Futuristic, Individualization

I can see what’s coming and tailor the journey uniquely for each person.

– Singularity Package: Focus, Relator

I pursue a few things deeply with intentionality and relationship at the core.

Try This: Group your Strengths into “packages” by an overall theme. Then, identify which package you lead with most often and consider: Which one could you develop more to round out your leadership or coaching style?

3. Tension Is More of a Signal than a Problem—Making CliftonStrengths Work Together

Some theme combinations will create tension. That doesn’t mean something’s wrong. It means your Strengths are asking you to lead with more awareness.

Consider these examples:

– Command + Woo = Assertive Charisma

You lead boldly and engage others effectively, but may need to moderate intensity depending on your audience.

– Competition + Relator = Ambitious Loyalty

You strive to win but also want your team to succeed with you. Balancing those instincts takes intentionality.

Try This: The next time you feel inner conflict, name the Strengths involved. Then ask:

What value does each Strength bring?

What does this moment require?

How can these Strengths support rather than compete with each other?

The perspective of a Strengths coach can inspire monumental change and growth in your workplace. If you’re one who prefers to independently blaze pathways, what if you became the Strengths Champion Certified Coach® your organization needed?

Putting It All Together

There are three simple ways you can apply Theme Dynamics in your personal or professional life:

First, Pair It. Look at how two of your Strengths interact. Consider them in synergy, rather than in isolation.

For example, if you have Woo and Communication, that pairing might show up as “Magnetic Messaging.” You enjoy meeting new people and you know just what to say to build rapport quickly.

Second, Package It. Consider which Strengths Packages best describe your overall motivational wiring.

These bundles offer insight into how your themes cluster together.

For instance, someone with strong Social Package themes, like Communication, Woo, and Relator, might naturally engage with people both personally and professionally.

Third, Personalize It. Take time to reflect on your own theme pairings or packages.

Give them names, write down examples, and pay attention to how they show up in your leadership or relationships.

For instance, someone with Competition and Relator might describe that combination as “Winning Together,” with a drive to succeed while staying loyal to the team.

By naming, framing, and exploring your Strengths in combination, you can unlock a new level of self-awareness and effectiveness.

Coaching Questions to Deepen Your Insight

– Which two of your Strengths energize one another?

– Which pair sometimes creates inner tension?

– What package reflects your natural style, and which one could stretch your leadership?
